Via Calvaria - The Trail of The Silent Hills (Zirc)
Via Calvaria in Hungary is a hiking trail - for the time being - in northern Transdanubia that connects the Calvary structures of 14 towns and villages, most of them of German roots. On Via Calvaria, travellers can pass from one Calvary to another through beautiful Pannonian landscapes, the Bakony and the hills of the Balaton Uplands, and stop for a moment of tranquillity on the way at places of quiet ("silent hills").
Built over the last three hundred years, the Calvary is an outstanding cultural, natural and architectural heritage site, well worth a visit for those who, as opposed to mass tourism, seek a cultural experience based on local values and in the ambience of the Pannonian landscape.
In 2023, in the European Capital of Culture of Veszprém and the Lake Balaton Region, 8 special programmes were held in the 'Calvary' villages.Built over the last three hundred years, the Calvary is an outstanding cultural, natural and architectural heritage site, well worth a visit for those who, as opposed to mass tourism, seek a cultural experience based on local values and in the ambience of the Pannonian landscape.
