Introduction

Tapolca Malom-tó (Mill Pond), located in the heart of the town, is one of the most romantic and iconic places in Hungary. Fed by warm spring water from the karst cave system beneath the town, the lake's temperature remains between 18 and 20 °C all year round, never freezing even in winter. The watermill on the lake's shore dates back to the 13th–14th centuries, although a predecessor was already in operation during the Árpád era.

Today, the mill operates as a hotel and generates renewable energy using a modernised water wheel. The colourful houses, restaurants and cafés around the lake, as well as the promenades, evoke a medieval atmosphere reminiscent of a Mediterranean port. Koi carp and sturgeon swim in the water and visitors can enjoy a playground and park on the shore.

Malom-tó is open to visitors all year round and is particularly popular for its summer lights, autumn Trout and Wine Festival and the sight of steaming water in winter. Along the lakeshore, visitors will find restaurants, cafés, ice cream parlours, a playground and event venues.
