Hungary's oldest cathedral, symbol of Veszprém Castle.

St. Michael's Cathedral is the central church of the Archdiocese of Veszprém, located on Holy Trinity Square, as the most significant building on Castle Hill. Its foundations were laid in the 11th century, presumably at the , and it has played a decisive role in Hungarian church history since the founding of the state.

The building has been rebuilt several times: Romanesque foundations, a Gothic sanctuary, a Baroque crypt, and a Neo-Romanesque façade built at the beginning of the 20th century. Its two towers are an iconic feature of the city, and its interior is rich in artistic treasures, stained glass windows, and historical relics. In 1981, Pope John Paul II elevated it to the rank of minor basilica.

Interesting facts

The relics of Queen Gisela are kept here, and the crypt displays the works of István Madarassy. The cathedral is not only a religious center, but also a cultural and tourist destination, offering a breathtaking panorama from the castle hill.
