Tethys tunnel - Veszprém
The Sintér Hill and Sintér Gorge near St. Stephen's Viaduct in Veszprém is a nature reserve of local importance in the heart of the city, starting from the bank of Séd creek and ending under the small bridge of the Viaduct at the Endrődi housing estate. This green trail is a good way to show the special geological features of the city, its protected plant communities and the fossils of the Tethys Sea, and to develop ecotourism. The archway of the culvert, famously known as the 'Seannel', has become an attractive destination for excursions and a nationally renowned site. In addition, the area offers a fascinating guided tour of the former quarry, the town barn, the hangman's and dogcatcher's yard, the epidemic hospital and the disinfectant station, all of which were located in the vicinity and offer interesting treasure hunts with their associated stories. The lookout tower in Harmat Street above offers the finest panorama of the city, and has become a place of pilgrimage.
A practical advantage of clearing and reopening the route is that it is the shortest link between Jerusalem Hill and Dózsaváros (the two most populous districts of Veszprém), which was sorely missed by the people who lived and worked here. The green corridor has also become a favourite route for dog walkers, runners and cyclists using the 'cloisters and gardens' route. The path is maintained by VMHE, Veszprém Municipal City and the Veszprém scouts, led by Mrs Zita Takács Tulipán. The 'local historying' of the 2 bus stops in the area draws the attention of the passers-by to the area with a picture filling the entire surface, trilingual information, digital content displayed via a QR code and naming (Tethys, Geopolis).
