Our exhibition entitled MEMORY MACHINE organises the objects and stories of the city of Veszprém along a timeline. We will discuss archaeological and historical time through artifacts, as well as the city’s true memory, its communal time and personal time through the examples of individuals and heroes.
But what exactly is MEMORY MACHINE? The term MEMORY MACHINE was coined by Zsolt Várady, a programmer and the creator of the former (now well-remembered, 'museum piece') iWiW social portal. “You can search for connection points among memories, and their network can be mapped out. A connection point could be that something happened at the same time or in the same place, or precisely for this reason or that reason. Memories can be connected through time, space, the type of memory, or through shared memories of the contributors. Additionally, there is another special way. When you read a memory, it might remind us of your own memory: This reminds me of... The memory described from the perspective of the given memory connects to the previous one, further expanding the network of connections between memories... Whether you remember a previous event depends as much on the present occurrences as on the events of the past. The goal is to create a system that facilitates recalling past events and sharing them with others. This is the memory machine.”
The goal of Laczkó Dezső Museum is for the exhibited objects to connect, mutually complement each other, and form a chain due to their historical significance. Our exhibition is recommended for those who have lived through the history of the city, those who feel nostalgic when seeing a displayed object, and those whose ancestors' stories about the 'old times' prompt them to discover Veszprém.
