Mária Canal (Western Belt Canal)
Introduction
The Western Belt Canal in Balatonmáriafürdő is not only a piece of water infrastructure, but also a symbol of the Balaton lifestyle.
Walking along the canal, one can observe the harmonious coexistence of nature and human presence: waterfowl, anglers, boats, and visitors share the space. The waterfront hospitality venues—restaurants, cafés, and pastry shops—serve as vibrant community hubs on summer evenings. The view of Badacsony across the lake offers a unique visual experience.
Location & Accessibility
The canal and its adjoining marina are located in the central part of Balatonmáriafürdő, just a short distance from the train station. The lakeside promenade is easily accessible on foot. On the western side of the canal, heading toward Balatonkeresztúr, there is also a fishing lake. Fishing permits can be purchased at Ficek Fishing Shop in Balatonkeresztúr, where daily, weekly, and annual passes are available.
