Kiskuti Tavern
Kiskuti Csárda (Tavern) is one of Veszprém's iconic dining establishments, with the first written mention dating back to 1830, though its history stretches even further, about 250-300 years. Moreover, the building located at the end of Veszprémvölgyi Street has operated as a hospitality venue throughout the centuries. The city purchased this iconic building and its courtyard last year with the aim of restoring it, under the European Capital of Culture project, to its original function by 2023 as a traditional hospitality venue embodying elements of folk culture.
The building was not demolished but underwent a complete renovation, with only a few interior walls removed to make room for a new kitchen, lavatories and an indoor dining area for nearly 50 guests. However, the project did not stop within the walls of Kiskuti Csárda. It also included a nearly 3,500 square metre courtyard, which was likewise renovated. Notably, the Csárda's 3,500 square metre garden was transformed into a recreational garden, accessible to everyone and harmoniously integrated with the building and its surroundings.
The garden serves the needs of both the Csárda's patrons and visiting groups. In the park of the Csárda, we established the Memorial Grove, which commemorates the 997 battle between István and Koppány as a symbol of peace and unity. The grove features a limestone bench engraved with text relevant to the historical event, along with a matching planting of local flora. The bench is owned by the Municipality of Veszprém, and the creation of the grove provided a great opportunity to place this object, which functions both as a resting spot and a memorial, making it visible to the city's residents and visitors alike. The venue is well suited for cultural programmes featuring folk music and dance, making it an excellent destination for locals, families and tourists alike.
