Basalt School, a project of CAN Architects, added a new layer of learning about the  Balaton Uplands: it created a learning space and methodology on each of the 10 volcanic hills. The combination of these is a flagship for formal, informal and non-formal learning processes and spaces that are just starting in Hungary. This glocal educational program is able to address two social strata, local residents and tourists, who are strongly separated in the region, at the same time, and to create a common language.
Elements of Basalt School:
- Basalt Classroom (placemaking): creating outdoor learning spaces based on community design, using landscape architecture and architectural tools to engage local kids and youth.
- Landscape exploration, creative and cultural workshops (activity creation): designing, testing and refining informal and non-formal learning spaces in the basalt classroom.
- Basalt Toolkit (methodology creation): drawing up a methodological summary based on the lessons learned from the workshops and the feedback of the participants, creating an educational and teaching program in collaboration with the professionals involved in its implementation.
The schools involved in the program were: Nivegy-Völgy German Nationality Elementary School in Balatoncsicsó, Valley of Arts Elementary School in Monostorapáti, Keresztury Dezső Elementary School in Nemesgulács, Bárdos Lajos Elementary School in Tapolca, Tatay Sándor Elementary School in Badacsonytomaj, Szigliget Elementary School and  Porva German Nationality Language Teaching Elementary School in Borzavár.
