Thanks to its past, Ajka is rich in industrial monuments, as well as industrial cultural and intellectual heritage. By rethinking these and reopening the world’s first Krypton Factory, a unique cultural, tourism and innovation district has been created in the town.
The factory was built in 1937 due to the invention of the krypton gas lightbulb by physicist Imre Bródy, born in Ajka, and it operated until the summer of 1944. With support from the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture programme, the partially renovated factory building was opened in Ajka on Saturday.
